Convert PDF to Word Online — Free PDF to Word Converter

Turn any PDF — including scanned and image-based files — into an editable Microsoft Word document (.docx) in seconds, right in your browser. Fonts, tables, columns, and images stay intact, so you can edit, comment, and reformat without retyping a line. Built-in OCR handles scanned pages; layout-preserving PDF to DOCX conversion handles everything else — and because the converter lives inside a full PDF editor, you can also fix, sign, or redact the document before exporting it. There's no software to install and no Adobe Acrobat license required. pdfFiller is trusted by 64 million users who process over 250,000 documents every day, and rated 4.6★ on G2, 4.5★ on Capterra, and 4.4★ on TrustRadius from 2,500+ verified reviews. The converter works in any browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Why convert PDF to Word

PDFs are built for sharing and printing, but locked for editing. Changing a PDF to Word unlocks the content: update a contract before sending it, fix a typo in an archived report, reuse paragraphs from an old proposal, or pull text out of a scan when the original source file is long gone. The alternative — copy-pasting line by line, losing formatting along the way — costs hours per document and still leaves you rebuilding tables and headings by hand. A clean conversion takes seconds and hands you a .docx that behaves like it was written in Word from the start: tracked changes, comments, styles, and find-and-replace all work exactly as expected.

Use cases for PDF to Word conversion

  • Contracts and agreements — update terms, dates, or signatory details before re-sending, with every edit visible in Word's tracked-changes view.
  • Reports and proposals — refresh the numbers in last quarter's PDF for a new audience instead of rebuilding the document.
  • Government and legal forms — turn PDF-only forms into Word to complete, adapt, or translate them more easily.
  • Resumes and cover letters — update career documents quickly between applications, even if you only kept the PDF version.
  • Academic papers and study materials — quote, cite, or repurpose content from PDF sources without manual retyping.
  • Scanned documents — turn paper records or photographed pages into searchable, editable text via OCR.

Digital or scanned PDF? Here's how to tell — and why it matters

There are two kinds of PDF, and they convert differently. A digital PDF was exported from software — try to select the text with your cursor, and it highlights. These convert directly, with the highest accuracy. A scanned or image-based PDF is really a stack of pictures of pages: the text won't select, search, or copy, because to a computer it's a photo. That's where OCR (Optical Character Recognition — the technology that reads text out of an image) comes in. pdfFiller's built-in OCR examines each page image, recognizes the characters, and produces a Word document with real, editable, searchable text. The selectable-text test takes two seconds and tells you exactly which path your file needs — and pdfFiller handles both in the same converter. OCR supports 30+ languages, so multilingual contracts and international paperwork convert just as cleanly as English-only files.

What survives the conversion to Word

A PDF to Word conversion is only as good as what arrives on the other side. pdfFiller's layout-preserving engine carries over fonts, headings, paragraph styles, bullet and numbered lists, tables with their borders and merged cells, embedded images in their original positions, hyperlinks, and page geometry — so the .docx mirrors the PDF instead of approximating it. The exported file is a standard DOCX that opens identically in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, and pdfFiller's own editor. To set expectations honestly: documents with selectable text convert most accurately, while heavily designed marketing PDFs with unusual embedded fonts or intricate multi-column layouts may need a quick clean-up pass in Word after export. For everyday business documents — contracts, reports, forms, letters — the conversion is typically ready to edit the moment it opens.

How to convert PDF to Word with pdfFiller

  1. 1.
Upload your PDF: Drag your file into the converter at the top of this page, click Select from device, or import from Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox.
    Regular content decoration
  2. 2.
Choose OCR for scanned PDFs (or skip for digital ones): If your PDF is a scan or image-based file (text isn't selectable), enable OCR (Optical Character Recognition — the tech that reads text out of an image) so the result is fully editable. For digital PDFs with selectable text, skip OCR for a faster, cleaner conversion.

  3. 3.
Edit before export (optional): Use pdfFiller's editor to add text, images, signatures, fillable fields, or redactions while the file is still open — no need to convert, edit, then re-export. This step is what most other PDF to Word converters don't offer.

  4. 4.
Save as Word: Click Done, open the three-dot menu, and choose Save As → Word document (.docx). Download locally or save to Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox.

Other ways to change a PDF to Word — and where they fall short

You can open a PDF directly in Microsoft Word (File → Open), and for simple, text-only digital PDFs that works — but Microsoft's own documentation notes the converted copy may not match the original page for page, and Word can't reliably extract text from scanned files. Copy-pasting from a PDF viewer strips formatting entirely and turns every table into a wall of tab characters. Importing a PDF into Google Docs flattens most layout and drops images on complex pages. A dedicated online converter with OCR exists precisely for the cases those shortcuts can't handle: scans, multi-page contracts, documents where the tables and formatting are the point. With pdfFiller you also get something none of the shortcuts offer — the ability to edit, sign, or redact the document before it ever leaves the converter, and to convert in the other direction (Word back to PDF) when the editing round is done and the file needs to be locked again.

Who needs this?

Teams across regulated and document-heavy industries use pdfFiller specifically because the converter sits inside a compliant, end-to-end workflow.

Legal and contracts

OCR handles scanned originals so old paper agreements come back as searchable, fully editable text — under audit-trail protections that meet legal-industry requirements.
Healthcare teams
Convert patient intake forms, EOBs (Explanation of Benefits — the insurance summary), clinical study notes, and provider credentialing paperwork into editable .docx under HIPAA-compliant handling. Update template forms or extract data from claims for analysis without re-keying a single line.
Finance and accounting
Convert vendor invoices, tax forms (W-2, 1099), bank statements, and audit working papers from PDF to Word for reformatting, footnotes, and analysis — without breaking the source PDF. The original stays intact; the editable copy is ready for whatever the team needs next.
Real estate and brokerage
Convert state-specific listing agreements, lease forms, property disclosures, and purchase agreements from locked PDFs into editable Word. Update terms for each transaction without recreating the document, then route the final version back to PDF for signature.
Education and academics
Convert lecture notes, journal articles, syllabi, and student handouts from PDF to editable Word for citation, annotation, and reuse across semesters. OCR turns scanned articles back into searchable text — useful when the original digital file is gone.

I have needed something like this to fill out legal forms instead of using a typewriter. I searched online and found this, then our attorney said this is what their office uses so we bought it. It is exactly what I needed. So thankful for it.

After I downloaded the program, I realized the price was going to be $19.99 a month. That seems pretty pricey. I am going to speak with finance and see what converter I can purchase. I am impressed with your application and customer service and will keep it in mind when making a decision.

initially the software did not allow me to transform document to pdf. contact customer support and eventually the software work as instructed. last the pdf filler content page will not allow the user to rotate the document to the correct form. the document had to be rescan to the proper orientation prior to changing out the format.

Drag your PDF onto the upload area at the top of this page, click Done, then choose Save As → Word document (.docx). Conversion runs in your browser; no software install required. The .docx opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or pdfFiller's editor and preserves your original layout, fonts, and images.
Yes — basic PDF to Word conversion is free, and converted files contain no watermarks. New accounts get a 30-day free trial of pdfFiller's full feature set (editing, e-signature, OCR for scans, batch processing, advanced sharing). There are no hard page limits for standard PDFs; very large or complex files may take longer to process.
Yes — fonts, headings, paragraphs, bullet lists, tables, and image placement carry over to the .docx for most documents. Multi-column layouts, unusual embedded fonts, or heavily designed marketing PDFs may need a quick clean-up in Word after export. PDFs with selectable text convert most accurately; for image-only scans, use the OCR option.
Yes. pdfFiller's built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition — the tech that reads text out of an image) extracts text from scanned and image-based PDFs and produces a fully editable .docx with selectable text. High-resolution scans convert most accurately (300 DPI or higher, the default on most modern scanners and phone scanner apps). Skewed, blurred, or heavily handwritten pages may need manual touch-up after export.
Yes. Files are encrypted while moving across the internet (TLS) and while stored on our servers. pdfFiller is independently audited for cloud-service security (SOC 2 Type II) and meets the privacy and handling rules required by U.S. healthcare law (HIPAA), EU and California privacy law (GDPR, CCPA), and credit-card processing standards (PCI DSS). Documents stay inside your account; they aren't shared with third parties or used to train external AI models. For sensitive contracts, you can password-protect the converted file before sharing.
Yes — but you'll need to enter the correct password to unlock the file before conversion. Once unlocked, pdfFiller converts it to .docx like any other PDF. Files where you don't have the password cannot be converted, by design, to prevent unauthorized access.
Yes. The browser version works on any modern phone or tablet, and pdfFiller's iOS and Android apps support PDF to Word conversion on the go. Files saved to your account sync across devices, so you can start a conversion on mobile and finish editing on desktop.
Yes — batch conversion is available on the 30-day free trial and on paid plans. Upload multiple PDFs from your device or cloud storage, queue them for conversion, and download the .docx files individually or as a ZIP. The free version supports one file at a time.
DOC is the older Microsoft Word format used through Word 2003. DOCX is the current format introduced with Word 2007 — smaller files, better compatibility with Google Docs and other modern editors, and required for features like inline comments and tracked changes. pdfFiller exports to .docx by default.
Yes — convert the PDF to .docx with pdfFiller, then open or upload the file in Google Docs, which edits DOCX natively. This two-step route preserves far more formatting than importing the PDF into Google Docs directly, which tends to flatten layout and drop images on complex pages. You can save the converted file straight to Google Drive from pdfFiller.
Yes. After conversion you can stay in pdfFiller to add text, images, signatures, fillable fields, or redactions — no need to download, reopen in Microsoft Word, and re-upload. From there, send for e-signature, share with collaborators, or save to Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox in one step.
